SONGS OF GEORGIA UK / GEORGIA 2009
High up in the Caucasus mountains, the haunting harmonies of a male voice choir are heard as
various landmarks of Georgia are introduced. British journalist Robert Parsons, now working for,
first came to Georgia in the 1980s and was astonished that nearly every family he visited was able to
sing traditional songs in complex harmony. Since then he has been a constant visitor to Georgia and
witnessed much of the remarkable and often tragic events that have taken place. He has also built a
house amongst the lush countryside and vineyards in the valley of Kakheti, the earliest recognised
cradle of wine and regular invasion route of the Persians from the east.
With Rob Parsons as our guide, the film captures a unique musical journey through a cultural tradition,
thousands of years old and still flourishing.
Born in 1958 in London. He briefly studied politics and philosophy at Bristol
University and then music at City University in London whilst studying piano
and conducting. He has a diploma in Pianoforte Performing (LRAM). In 2003
he became interested in making a film about Georgia and started visiting the
country regularly with a camera. Songs of Georgia is the result and is in a way a
conclusion of a circular journey started by his Georgian grandmother when she
left her Georgian roots to devote her life to western classical music.
