Nowadays, when the emerging Georgian democracy has entered the decisive phase of its fight for its very existence, the
value of Georgian cinematography as a particular branch of artistic activities goes far beyond the limits of purely artistic significance.
We see it as one of the main means to reinforce our unique identity and to introduce it to the free world.
Last year Georgian cinematography marked its 100th anniversary. This means that it has a rich and unique tradition, since
during the whole period of the last century Georgian filmmakers create tens of masterpieces which are still held in high esteem
among the film critics of the world. But in order to prevent the tradition from becoming the domain of history and to prevent
Georgian cinematography from becoming a mere museum specimen, we must ensure the present-day dynamic development of
industry. Despite the serious worldwide economic crisis, which is acutely felt also in our country, today Georgian film industry
is once again gaining momentum. Naturally, this is a complicated and costly process. Nevertheless we cordially believe that the
intensification and further development of this process has no alternative.
Films festival as such is an inseparable part of film industry. Therefore, “Prometheus” contributes to the reinforcement of
filmmaking traditions in Georgia and its popularization on a worldwide scale. “Prometheus” has almost all prerequisites from
a regional scale festival to transform into a cultural event of a worldwide significance. This requires not only material support,
but also innovative thinking and self-denying efforts. I would like to wish every success to the 10th festival, as well as to all of its
participants and hope that the festival will become an exiting and enjoyable experience for all of them!
