a. Organization and Mission, The company with an
aggregate of 142 enlisted men and five officers operated and
maintained Corps of Jhgineer refrigeration equipment and
civilian refrigerated storage p1ants.l It was organized into
three platoons: (1 headquarters platoon, a butchery pintoon
and a cold storage platoon with attached personnel Prom the
Veterinary Corps for mat inspection purposes.2 Under many
cordi ions it w;i8 not necessary to activate the butchery pln-
toon. P
b. Use. The capacity of the company was determined
by the particux situation, since the aveilable storage
ftlcilities governed the amount that it could handle. When
Engineer collapsible refrigeratton box s were used the comljany
served as mmy as 120,000 troops.! Under coilditions
dherein the company personnel acted in a supervieory capacity
and employed civilians end pri onera of war, approximtely
650,000 troops were oupgorted.3 This company wa~inot used
in the Combat Zone, but it did meet all expectations in
connection with the use of collaysible refrigeration boxes.3
c. lidointenanoe.' The Quartermaster responsi bilitg
in maintning refrigeration facilities was limited to the
repair of the refrigeration units coolim the mobile vans.
A11 oi' the reaainlng maintenance responsibilities were
divided among the other servicea. The responsibilities of
the Corps of Engiiaers, for example, inoluded:
(1) Repnir to existing cold storage nnd ice
facilities.
(2) Operation and mnfntenance of all statio
refrigeration plants.
In the European Theater of Operations Engineer personiel
were preoccupied with other activities which were basic in
advancing the war effort, hence their responsibilities were
aesumed by the using unit or other u,uartermc?ster agencies.
134. Quarteraaster Refrigeration Company (Mobile) T/O

n, Orgnhixntion and Mission. The Quurtekmster
1-frigeration Company (Uobile) was organized into three plntoons
of three sections eaoh. Each section and platoon was
capable of operating independently.5 The mission of the
company was to transport fresh meats and other perishables
from the advance depot or other point where fixed refrigeration
was provided to the division or army supply points.
