148 PROCEEDINGS OF THE GRAND LODGE
was somewhat unusual, but considering the fact that this was
the one hundredth Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge
of Louisiana, and that Perfect Union Lodge No. 1 was one of
the Lodges which had assisted in its foundation, he felt fully
justified on account of the sentiment involved in requesting the
Grand Master to present in open session, to each of the Past
Masters of his Lodge, appropriate jewels of their rank which
had already been provided.
The Grand Master assenting and there being no objection,
the names of the Past Masters of Perfect Union Lodge were
called, and after they had assembled about the altar, the presentations
were made by the M. W. Grand Master, who addressed
them as follows:
Past Masters of Perfect Union Lodge No. 1:
It is indeed a very great honor to have been chosen by the members
of Perfect Union No. 1, a Lodge so intimately associated with the
history of the Grand Lodge of Louisiana, to present to you on this, our
Centennial Communication, surrounded as you are by your associates in
the noble work of Masonry, these testimonials of the friendship and .
esteem of those over whom you have presided.
In the cause for which we labor, the reward comes to each of us in
the deeper appreciation of the beauties and excellencies of our great institution.
A greater sense of satisfaction fills us, however, when public
acknowledgement is made of the efforts exerted in the furtherance of
principles so intimately bound with the welfare of humanity.
To be thus remembered by your associates is not so much a reward
as you have that in the consciousness of having performed your duty
as men and Masons. It is rather a proof of their affection—a confirmation
of your merit.
Let your work bear fruit, my brethren, and become an incentive
for those who will follow you, to labor as you have done fbr the institution
in which we are all interested.
I assure you I deeply appreciate the opportunity given.me to present
you with these jewels and to wish you in the name of the Grand Lodge
of Louisiana and of Perfect Union No. 1, a long life of usefulness, in
the happiness and enjoyment of the love of your fellow men.
The jewels were then handed by the M. W. Grand Master
to each one of the following Worshipful brethren:
John B. McFarland, Andrew Hero, Percy S. Benedict,
Charles E. Turck, E. J. Hamilton, I. F. Siekman, Horace A.
Perry, Edward Baker, William C. Wright, L. P. Delahoussaye,
J. Bart Davis and J. Paul Haller.
