ON FOREIGN CORRESPONDENCE. 77
The Grand Treasurer pro tern, Bro. W. H. Prioleau, reported that
the disbursements from the General Fund had been less than the receipts
by some one hundred and seventy dollars.
Perpetual Jurisdiction over rejected material was renounced so far
as concerns such material after a removal from the Jurisdiction of the
Grand Lodge after a term of five years.
An amendment to the Constitution in line with the recommendation
of the Grand Master noted above was offered, and its consideration, under
the law, postponed to the next annual communication.
The report on Foreign Correspondence was prepared by M. W. Bro.
J. L. Michie. It is his first born. It is a fine child, of full weight, and
perhaps a few ounces over. We very heartily congratulate the parent;
and trust that many more youngsters like it may sit about his table, for
it is evident that he has his quiver full of them.
Eeviewing Louisiana he says of the Address of Grand Master
Thomas that it was '' brimful of beautiful gems of thought.'' He quotes
very liberally.
He says of the refusal to permit the "Woodmen of the World to meet
in a Masonic Hall, and granting of permission to a Lodge to meet in a
Woodmen of the World Hall that "it is a queer rule that won't work
both ways.'' If the Brother will consider a moment he will soon find
that it is not so queer after all—any number can be placed under a
radical, but there are many numbers under a radical that cannot be
taken from under it. So says every High School Algebra.
He dissents from Brother Thomas' refusal to consent to a Lodge
as such attending a religious service, and then comments as follows:
"As before noted, the Grand Master refused to allow a Lodge to
attend service in a church, on the ground that a church is sectarian,
yet he allowed a sectarian mission to conduct services in a Lodge
room, while he himself publicly installed the officers of a Lodge in a
Methodist church, and delivered a lecture on the Tenets of Freemasonry
in a Presbyterian church. "Verily, of a truth, the era of hair-splitting
is at our doors."
Our Brother needs to look into the matter a little further; for we
feel quite sure that when he does so he will quickly perceive that there
is nothing inconsistent between the rulings and the acts of Brother
Thomas.
He criticises our Grand Master for "officially recognizing" the
"wife and daughter degree." This is based upon his reporting having
conferred it at a celebration of St. John's Day. It seems to us that
the act of the Grand Master was no more an official recognition than if
he had reported having engaged in skipping the rope at a picnic.
Brother Michie then further says that having elsewhere "officially
recognized the Order of the Eastern Star, as legitimate" "he certainly
