GRAND LODGE F. AND A. M. OF LOUISIANA. 27
An institution free from prejudice, superstition and intolerance.
Its golden shields of humanity and brotherly love cover its members,
whether in success or adversity, in peace or in war. It has no rack
or thumb-screws, and it binds no dissenter to the stake. It ostracises
no one because of his opinion, and it issues no mind-enslaving edicts
nor anathemas against any human being.
An institution which teaches how the "mighty and unceasing conflicts
of truth with error, light with darkness, beauty with deformity,
virtue with vice, and life with death'' are to be won for the good and
the glory of mankind.
An institution that feels the divine presence in the inspirations
of the soul; that reads the story of the universe in the rocks of the
earth and in the shining wheels of the firmament. An institution that
uses reason for its lamp, education and truth for its guide, and which
has humanity and reverence for God as its chief aim,
May this grand institution live through all the generations to come;
and may every member thereof, as he marches along the thorny road
of human life, grow and increase in brotherly love, in Masonic virtue
and in reverence for the Supreme Grand Master of the Universe.
Finally, in behalf of my colleagues representing fifty-nine Grand
Jurisdictions in the nations of the earth, I express the hope and wish
that our institution and all members thereof, throughout all the Grand
Jurisdictions of the world, may continue to increase, as Tennyson
says:
'' Not alone in power
And knowledge, but by year and hour
In reverence and in charity.''
'' THE CONSTITUENT LODGES OF THE GRAND LODGE,
STATE OF LOUISIANA"
M. W. Bro. L. P. Delahoussaye,
Past Grand Master of Masons, State of Louisiana.
An inspiration to higher aims, broader charity and a
more useful life.
M. W. Toastmaster, M. W. Grand Master, Officers of the Grand Lodge,
Brethren, and Our Honored Guests:
I must admit that I am very much surprised to be called upon, at
a moment's notice, to respond to a toast this evening, when the other
speakers have been given many days for the preparation of their subjects.
Under these circumstances I must therefore crave your indulgence
for these impromptu remarks.
