Collected by V. S. Exploring Expedition (1838-18-1:2). Original
number 7. Catalogued May 81, 1860.
Specimen once mounted and on exhibition, then packed away in storage, but
taken out March 31, 1902. It is in fair condition for an old specimen, evidently
bleached. It had no skull inside, nor is there any record of one.
Peale speaks of but one specimen, a male, and un(iuestionabIy it is No. o9fil,
catalogued as PtcropuK mncklotil Temminck from ]\Iangsi.

Collected by the U. S. Exploring Expedition, 1838-42. Cata-
logued December 20, 1859.
Skin with wings spreail and wing-nienihranes torn in jilaces. Skin of head
badly torn and mutilated, probably due to a clumsy extraction of the skull,
which has been lost. Right ear missing.
There is very little doul)t that the above is the type. The de.scription is based
upon a single specimen collected by the U. S. Explormg Expedition from the
Samoan Islands.
