<strong>THE</strong> <strong>COLLECTOR</strong> SERIES<br />

Counts of Schaiimburg-Lippe, the Princes of Waldeck,<br />

the Counts of Sayn, the Counts of Lichtenstein, and<br />

the Archbishops of Mayence, all struck an abundance of<br />

money in each metal at Wiesbaden and elsewhere.<br />

The coinage of the undivided landgraviat of Hesse<br />

commences with bracteates with the Hessian lion,<br />

and develops into a rich volume of currency in<br />

gold, silver, and copper, the thaler first appearing in<br />

1502. The earlier specimens are particularly scarce.<br />

Within this territory were several feudal mints, includ-<br />

ing Isenburg and Oppenheim.<br />

Frankfort - on - the - Main was once the Frankish<br />

capital, and continued during centuries to enjoy poli-<br />

tical and monetary autonomy ; we have numismatic<br />

examples from the eleventh to the nineteenth century<br />

(1866). The absolute right to strike its own money<br />

was conferred in 1428.<br />

The margraviat, afterward grand-duchy, of Baden,<br />

of which there were two branches down to 1771,<br />

is less remarkable on account of its own coinage,<br />

which dates from an early period, than as the seat of<br />

several independent mints, of which we may mention<br />

Mannheim, Ulm, Leiningen, Freiburg - in - Brisgau,<br />

Breisach, &c, almost all of which issued currency<br />

anterior to that of the margraviat itself; the earlier<br />

specimens of Baden, especially the gold, are difficult<br />

to procure.<br />

Wuetembukg, at first a county, then (1492) a<br />

duchy, and finally (1806) a kingdom, with which,<br />

till 1792, was incorporated the countship of Mont-<br />
