Continental names—The forms of Continental names<br />

of plaees and persons are somewhat different in different<br />

writers and works, and it is difficult to decide on a<br />

uniform orthography. Of the termination for fortified<br />

positions, or at least localities which owe their designa-<br />

tion to having been originally strongholds, we have, for<br />

instance, four variants :<br />

Burg, Burgh, Burg, Berg:<br />

Contorniutus, or Xtoni vontorniuti—A peculiar class of<br />

Roman medallions, rather than coins, of special module,<br />

and with peculiar characteristics, of which the applica-<br />

tion seems to be uncertain. See Stevenson in v.<br />

Contrefagon—An imitation or counterfeit.<br />

Cunvention-muney—A legacy from the monetary<br />

system of the ancients, who had similarly their alliance-<br />

coms. Comp. also Bwndesthaler and Vereinsmilnze,<br />

Dreilandcr and Vicrlandcr, in Ha/litt's "Coins of<br />

Europe." The earliest modern European convention-<br />

money appears to be that of 1240, unless the treaty<br />

between Brabant, Limburg, and Louvain (1006-15)<br />

was really such an arrangement : see Hazlitfs " Coins<br />

of Europe," p. 384. The half daalder of 1580, on a<br />

Zwol, and bears in the field the arms<br />

of the three towns and the date, and on the reverse the<br />

double-headed eagle and imperial titles. There are<br />

thalers of the same series with the portrait of Charles V.,<br />

but without his titles. The coinage issued during the<br />
