Friesland, Poland, and the Low Countries, the regis-<br />

tration is limited to the decade, 83 standing for<br />

1483, 96 for 1596, whereas in the portcullis coinage<br />

of Elizabeth of England and 1 represent 1600 and<br />

1601.<br />

Dei Gratia—A formula which occurs on money of<br />

Charles le Chauve (840-875), Eudes (887-898), &c.<br />

Deniers of Louis II. and III. bear Misericordid Domini ,•<br />

one of Hugues, son of Robert II., reads, Domini dextra.<br />

On some of the testons of Henry III. of France, and of<br />

Jeanne d'Albret, Queen of Navarre, 1570-76, occurs<br />

rived from Navarre. The first use of this term in<br />

England appears to have been by Richard II. Even<br />

the Protector Cromwell inserted it on his money. A<br />

loud outcry was raised because the words were omitted<br />

on the silver florin of 1848-9, and a new type was sub-<br />

stituted, although on many of the coins of the Georges<br />

the D. G. is absent. It was a foolish clamour about an<br />

idea which is being gradually discredited abroad.<br />

Demy—A term applied to the gold lion of 20 grs.,<br />

struck under Robert II. of Scotland, the lion itself<br />

weighing 40, or more usually 38 grs. The half-lions of<br />

James I. and II. were heavier (about 25 grs.).<br />
