GREEK <strong>COIN</strong>S<br />

Antigonus Gonatas, sometimes ascribed to Doson, ap-<br />

pears to refer, from the type of the reverse, to the naval<br />

victory obtained by him over the Egyptian fleet off<br />

Cos in B.C. 265. The Roman coinage for Macedon<br />

usually bears the word Leg, to indicate that it was<br />

struck by the authority of the Roman Legatus or<br />

deputy ; but the most valuable relic of this class is the<br />

gold stater of the Roman general T. Quinctius Flami-<br />

ninus, assigned to the period following the battle of<br />

Cynoscephalse (b.c -<br />

history is unknown.<br />

The coins of Paeonia, which begin with those of<br />

Lycceius (b.c. 359), after the revolt of the Pseonians,<br />

at the death of Perdiccas III., from the Macedonian<br />

yoke, form a short series spreading over about sixtv<br />

years, and composed of silver tetradrachms of reduced<br />

module, didrachms, drachms, and tetraboli.<br />

Lucaxia.—This region, peopled by colonists from<br />

Tarentum, Thurium, Samnium, &c, comprised the very<br />

important and prolific mints of Metapontum, Poseidonia,<br />

Paestum, Sybaris, and Thurium. At first it employed<br />

the money of other cities not originally included in<br />

its boundaries, Metapontum, Sybaris, and Poseidonia<br />

among them ;<br />

but eventually, down to the Roman time,<br />

about 210 b.c, the various towns produced a remark-<br />

ably fine series of coins, chiefly silver, ranging from<br />

the archaic uniface incuse type to the 10-drachma<br />

piece. A wolfs head found in the field on some of<br />

the reverses is significant of the name of the locality.<br />
