his consorts; some have II. and A. for Henry and Anne<br />

(Bolevn). The formation of a satisfactory collection is<br />

barred by the excessive difficulty of procuring speci-<br />

mens in good state from the heavy wear of the low<br />

standard of metal under the Tudors and Stuarts.<br />

The money of the Channel Islands and the<br />

Isle of Man forms a couple of groups of differing<br />

origin, yet alike distinct from the ordinary currency for<br />

the Colonies. The former dates from 1830, of which<br />

year we have the four doubles and one double for<br />

Guernsey, and extends to the present reign, comprising<br />

Id., 2 d., 4 d., and 8 (7. for Guernsey, and a penny,<br />

halfpennv, and farthing for Jersey. The earliest 2 d.<br />

appears to be of 1858, and 8 d. of 1834. The double<br />

is interesting as the last numismatic vestige of French<br />

rule. There are silver Bank tokens for 5s. for Guernsey,<br />

1809, and of 3s. and Is. 6d. for Jersey, 1812-13, besides<br />

others of lower values issued by tradesmen. There is<br />

no gold, and the English money is generally accepted.<br />

The 5s. Guernsev token of 1809 is rare.<br />

The Isle of Man owes its independent coinage to the<br />

feudal conditions under which it was held till 1765 by<br />

the Stanley family. James, Earl of Derby (1702-36),<br />

struck from 1709 to 1733 a series of copper coins of<br />

the Eagle and Child type, of which some are reputed<br />

to be patterns, and a piece supposed to be intended<br />

for a half-crown, 1725 ;<br />

and the Duke of Athol in 1758<br />

issued two coins (penny and twopence) with his crowned<br />

monogram. From 1786 to 1839 the regal copper with<br />
