LIFELONG
Aslı Özge
2013 / TURKEY, GERMANY, NETHERLANDS
Ela, a dancer/actress whose career is stalled, and Can, her
architect husband, live in an Istanbul suburb. They seem to lead
an idyllic life. But when their daughter leaves for ankara to study,
they find themselves in a risky face-off, which falters when Ela
stumbles on her husband making a secret phone call.
Lifelong, the second film by this Turkish director after the highly
acclaimed Men on the Bridge, draws a raw portrait of the Istanbul
bourgeoisie, horridly concerned about appearances. Favouring
blue and grey tones in a cold, modern interior with an oppressive
transparency, aslı Özge uses all her directorial talents in a film
that recalls antonioni.
OFFICIAL SELECTION
International competition
2012 / BRAzIL
The lives of three families is suddenly upset: that of Pedro, whose
placid pace is suddenly turned upside down by an unexpected
visit; of Eduardo, who begins to feel a strange pain when he is
about to go on holiday with his wife and child; and of ana and
João, who are about to be reunited with their child who was
stolen at birth 16 years ago.
The musical moments that the young director Caetano Gotardo
uses to subtly shade the dramatic consequences of these events
keep the viewer constantly attentive, on the edge of implosion.
a film that conveys a powerful, universal reality.
