mY AiN FOLK
Bill Douglas
1973 / UK
Jamie and his cousin Tommy’s
grandmother dies. Tommy
is sent to an orphanage and
Jamie goes to live with his
other grandmother, a violent,
alcoholic woman. Soon Jamie
has to go to the orphanage
as well.
The second part of the Bill
Douglas Trilogy, My Ain Folk
is in many ways the darkest
of the three films. Offering a
stark description of Jamie’s
loneliness, as he is subjected
to both psychological and
physical violence, Bill Douglas
talentedly follows in the
footsteps of Robert Bresson
and Maurice Pialat. Superbly
restored by the British Film
Institute.
1972 / UK
Jamie, an 8-year-old boy,
lives with his cousin and his
grandmother in Newcraighall,
a Scottish mining village. The
boy meets a German prisoner
of war and befriends him.
The first “professiona” film
by Bill Douglas, My Childhood
was the first part of a trilogy
inspired by the director’s
own impoverished childhood.
Developing a unique style
influenced by Russian and
French realistic cinema, the
young filmmaker made his
mark on this first try of his,
now considered a masterpiece.
Bill Douglas
1978 / UK
Jamie leaves the orphanage
to return to live with his
grandmother. He works in a
mine and then at a tailor’s,
before joining the Royal Air
Force, which sends him to
Egypt. He meets Robert, and
they become friends.
The last part of the trilogy, My
Way Home portrays the hero’s
travels, but also his return
to his nearly deserted native
village. More optimistic than
the previous films, this episode
is brightened by the strong
friendship experienced by
young Jamie, representing
the director, played by
the same actor. Superbly
1963 / USA
The chemistry teacher Julius
Kelp has a hard time with
his life. With a dislikable
physique and squeaky voice,
this clumsy nerd has no
success with women. He then
develops a miraculous potion
that he hopes will solve all his
problems.
A colourful, cartoonish
comedy, The Nutty Professor
denounces the cult of
machismo and appearance.
Inspired by Dean Martin, Jerry
Lewis’s longtime seductive
partner, the main character
humourously embodies all
those who are “beautiful
inside”. A landmark in American
comedy.
