VENUS IN FUR
Roman Polanski
2013 / FRANCE, POLAND
Thomas is looking for an actress for the lead role in his play.
He goes through a series of candidates, but none of them are
convincing. Annoyed by so much mediocrity, he despairs. Along
comes Vanda — brainless, vulgar, and desperate to get the part.
She is everything he hates. But during the audition, the roles are
reversed and the dominator becomes the one subjugated.
With this film, Roman Polanski revisits some of the most
emblematic themes of his work and offers Emmanuelle Seigner
a fitting role. In this disturbing interior, enhanced by the music
of Alexandre Desplat, the actress takes on a superbly arrogant
Mathieu Amalric — a confrontation that the director uses to
harshly criticize the vanities and pretenses of professionals
in the field. Venus in Fur also offers an inspired reflection on
sadomasochism and manipulation. A sparkling, inventive,
delightfully insolent film.
THE BROKEN CIRCLE BREAKDOWN
Felix van Groeningen
2012 / BELGIUM, NETHERLANDS
Elise and Didier fall in love at first sight. From their passion comes
a little girl — a rosy picture, but life is not a fairy tale. Elise and
Didier are two individuals who do not have the same attachment
to reality, and when their daughter falls seriously ill, they have
different reactions, and their relation suffers.
Based on the play “The Broken Circle Breakdown featuring
the Cover-Ups of Alabama”, The Broken Circle Breakdown
is a haunting film, like Elise’s tattooed body. With flashbacks
and plote twists, Felix van Groeningen manages to make his
characters endearing to us, inspiring the viewer’s affection
without ever resorting to shortcuts or easy solutions. Bathed in
bluegrass music, this flamboyant melodrama, full of emotion,
is played by two actors with a rare physical intensity.
