ete. Another department of real strength was Art acd Archaeology, which<br />

Flexner as Director of Studies had helped with funds <strong>for</strong> various explora-<br />

tions, particularly those of the Agora, which he perscaded John D. Rocke-<br />

feller Jr., to undertake to finance. In econonics and finance there had<br />

been lurninar5es also there. From Flexner's vantage point, Princeton was<br />

almost made to order <strong>for</strong> the <strong>Institute</strong>'s background.<br />

But whether this had been the case or not =as almost irrelevant.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Founders were determfned that the instftution they were financing<br />

must be located in New Jersey, and it required a major ef<strong>for</strong>t on the part<br />

of their advisers to get their permission to recognize Princeton as being<br />

within the State when their hopes were so concentrated on dignifying<br />

Newark. <strong>The</strong> decision was Dr. Flexner's, and it was a vise one -- the<br />

only one possible in a?.l the circumstances. But it was clear that the<br />

Director had to remain in the background, and the major responsibility<br />

fell upon Messrs. Leidesdosf and Maass to bend the iron will of Mr. Bm-
