<strong>The</strong>re is a real doubt that Flexner regarded the members appoint-<br />

ed <strong>for</strong> the Department of A rt and Archaeology as in fact wmbers of the<br />

<strong>Institute</strong> <strong>for</strong> Advenced <strong>Study</strong>. True, they received stipends from the In-<br />

stitute, or from one of the foundations at the Director's request, and<br />

their names appeared in the annual Bulletins as did the mbers' who<br />

came to work with professors of the <strong>Institute</strong>. But in the textual mater-<br />

ials which gave a brfef account of the activities in each School, the<br />

names a£ thost who were called <strong>for</strong> the Departmnt did not appear, except<br />

in rare instances, Dr. Aydelotte changed this policy, including as full<br />

an account of the work of these men as of those called by the <strong>Institute</strong>.<br />

Though Flexner was the true pro2het of scholarly cooperztion to achieve<br />

the largest possible results without a meum or teum, it was Aydelotte,<br />

who had not gone through the bruising experiences with Dr. Morey, who was<br />

able to describe the fruit of his predecessor's vision vith clarity and<br />

generosity.<br />

Flexneras accomodation to the needs of the Department of Art<br />

and Archeology brought him mch criticism which never twk into consider-<br />

ation the worthiness of the individuals or the importance or value of their<br />

tor did, saying he sought to placate hodtility at the Universfty engendered<br />
