Mr. Roughton was an elder statesran. He had been president<br />

of the Corning Glass Company, his family's enterprise, when he decided<br />

to enter the public service. He served two tenus in Congress, after<br />

which he becane Amxican Arrbsssador to Germany (1922-1925) as President<br />

Hardingk appointee, and to England (1925-1929) as President Coolidge's.<br />

He and Dr. Flexner had met in Gemany and England; they were warm friends.<br />

Governor Lehman was a partner in kkan Brothers, Bankera. He<br />

went into politics and uss elected krLa.cratic Lieutenant-Governor of<br />

Nev York in 1928. Fie was re-elected in 1930, and then elected Governor<br />

Ear four years (1932-19361, which were followed by years of distfnguished<br />

semice fn the United States Senate.<br />

Company, was trustee of New York University and the Neu York Public<br />

Despite.the differences in the interests, ages, qualities and<br />

pursuits of this group, they were knit together,by a strong camnan pur-<br />

pose -- to help the Director in every way possible to echieve a great<br />

success fn his ef<strong>for</strong>t to create optimum conditions <strong>for</strong> advanced study,<br />

Nevertheless, Flexner had reason to feel that the burden was his to an<br />
