substance were included,: one- proscribing discrimination on account<br />

of race, relfgion or sex, and the other <strong>for</strong>bidding the acceptance of.<br />

gifts frm any source other than the donors, if they were accompanied<br />

by conditions deemed to be incompatible vith the purposes of the Insti-<br />

tute. In the interests of simplicity Hr. Hardin had amended the language<br />

suggested by Flexner to eliminate irrelevant mterial from the staterrrent<br />

of purposes,<br />

<strong>The</strong> legal title of the Foundstion and the <strong>Institute</strong> were<br />

"<strong>Institute</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Advanced</strong> <strong>Study</strong> --<br />

<strong>The</strong> purpose <strong>for</strong> which this corporation is <strong>for</strong>red is the<br />

establfshmnt, at or in the vicinity of Newaxk, N. J.,<br />

of an institute <strong>for</strong> advanced study, and <strong>for</strong> the promotion<br />

of howledge in all fields, and <strong>for</strong> the tra'lning of<br />

advanced students and workers <strong>for</strong> and beyond the degree<br />

of Doctor of Philosophy and other professicnal degrees<br />

of equal standing.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Founderst Letter to the Trustees was a docmnt now of<br />

high purpose and spirit, expressed entirely in tern of the Pounders'<br />

wishes, which were to become lhw to their Trustees. (See Appendixvy,<br />

<strong>The</strong> following were the essential statewnts:<br />

<strong>The</strong> primary purpose fs the pursutt of advanced learning<br />

and exploration in fields of pure science and high schol-<br />

arship to the utmost degree that the facilities of the<br />

institution and the ability of the faculty and students<br />

will permit.
