“Sports are not about medals.” It’s a nice
phrase, but it might not work for the ISSF
World Cup Final. Most of the participants qualify
by winning a medal during the ISSF World
Cup Series throughout the year. And if you
pack about 100 top-players into a venue and
let them compete to decide who’s the best,
well… all of them will try to earn the Cup.
We researched the ISSF archives to rank the
most titled nations and – not surprisingly –
China finished on top. The ChINESE TEAM

won a total of 165 medals (73 Pistol, 46 Rifle,
39 Shotgun, 7 Running Target) with a prevalence
of Gold (62 medals). More than any other
country. RUSSIA finished in second place,
with 142 medals (58 Pistol, 35 Rifle, 42 Shotgun,
7 Running Target). But how did history
interfere with rankings? It’s difficult to say,
but when we analyse these tables we must
take into consideration that the URS stands
in sixth place with 48 medals won from 1988
and 1991. On the other hand, ITALY also deserves
a spot on the “most titled nations”

podium, with 104 medals, almost all won in
Shotgun events (86 medals won in Shotgun).
GERMANY follows in fourth place, with the
same number of Gold medals as Italy (41),
just five Silvers behind. Not so far apart: 2013
might be the right year to step up!
