Equipment needed:
4 SONET test sets
Test Plan for Optical Grooming Switches
Test method:
1. Follows on from successful completion of TCB005
2. Confirm that lockout is still in place and that circuits are correctly routed and all test sets
are error free
3. Break PAR#1-LA#1 fibre
Expected result
• Within 10 seconds alarm should be raised indicating location of fibre break
• Both the OC3 and OC12c circuits will see a brief loss of traffic – the duration of
which will be recorded in each case
• Switch management system should clearly show that neither trail has been
routed/switched onto PAR#5-LON#1 fibre. The actual routing will be recorded for
each trail.
Other comments:
Depending on supplier implementation either protection switching or mesh restoration may
occur here – and it may be different for the OC3 and OC12c circuits. An obvious measure of
success is that the shorter the loss of traffic the better.
TCB007: Confirm that when lockout is removed the management system allows easy
reoptimisation of network.
Test purpose:
Following successful completion of TCB006, the network is in a complex, dual-fault situation
with quite tortuous circuit routings. Once all faults are repaired, it is important that the
operator can easily use the management system to reoptimise circuit routings.
Equipment needed:
4 SONET test sets
Test method:
1. Follows on from successful completion of TCB006
2. First confirm that the results of TCB006 are fully and accurately documented
3. Repair the PAR#5-LON#1 fibre and record any traffic loss and reports/alarms on
management system
4. Remove the lockout on PAR#5-LON#2 fibre and record any traffic loss and
reports/alarms on management system
5. Use the management system to automatically reoptimise the network configuration and
circuit routing
6. Note durations of any loss of traffic and confirm circuit routings are back to initial state
Expected result:
• There should be as little impact on traffic as possible
• The automatic reoptimisation process should be easy and intuitive – should take
BTexact no more than 10 minutes
• At the completion of the test the network should be in a stable state – error free, alarm
free and with the circuits returned to their original optimal routings
