The popularity of cell phones as an educ<strong>at</strong>ional tool co<strong>in</strong>cides with the ris<strong>in</strong>g popularity of cell phones<br />
among all Americans, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g teens. The most recent Pew Internet report on cell phone use among 12-<br />
17 year-olds shows th<strong>at</strong> as of July, 2011, 77% of 12-17 had a cell phone. 8 Moreover, some 23% of all 12-<br />
17 year-olds say their cell phone is a smartphone. Smartphone ownership is highest among older teens:<br />
31% of 14-17 year-olds have a smartphone, compared with just 8% of those ages 12-13. At th<strong>at</strong> time,<br />
there were no significant differences <strong>in</strong> smartphone ownership (versus regular cell phones) by the teen’s<br />
race, ethnicity, or household <strong>in</strong>come. Teens whose parents have a college educ<strong>at</strong>ion were slightly more<br />
