6.1. UN/EDIFACT Messages <strong>for</strong> logistics in transport<br />

MIST Working Group, version 2001<br />

The first part of this section (6.1.1) identifies the roles of the major types of party involved in a<br />

transport movement of goods. The second part (6.1.2) lists all the possible message flows<br />

associated with an individual goods movement arranged in chronological order. In each case a brief<br />

description of the in<strong>for</strong>mation flow is presented included the sending and receiving parties together<br />

with the appropriate UN/EDIFACT message(s) which can be used to achieve the in<strong>for</strong>mation flow<br />

electronically.<br />

Following this <strong>for</strong> each message mentioned in the first part, a functional definition is provided in<br />

section 6.1.3. together with usage notes where appropriate.<br />

6.1.1. Roles of Parties involved<br />

Consignor<br />

The consignor is defined as the party which, by contract with a carrier, consigns or sends<br />

goods with the carrier, or has them conveyed by the carrier. The original consignor is<br />

synonymous with the seller.<br />

Consignee<br />

The consignee is defined as the party to which goods are consigned and by whom the goods,<br />

cargo or containers are to be received. The final consignee is synonymous with the buyer.<br />

<strong>Transport</strong> Services Buyer<br />

The transport services buyer is defined as the party ordering the transport services from the<br />

transport services provider and may be either the consignor or the consignee depending on<br />

the business scenario.<br />

<strong>Transport</strong> Services Provider or Freight Forwarder/Carrier<br />

The transport services provider or freight <strong>for</strong>warder/carrier is defined as the party providing<br />

transport services i.e. the party undertaking or arranging transport of goods between named<br />

points and/or the party undertaking the <strong>for</strong>warding of goods respectively.<br />

Logistics Services Buyer<br />

The logistics services buyer is defined as the party ordering the logistics services from the<br />

logistics services provider and may be either the consignor or the consignee depending on<br />

the business scenario.<br />

Logistics Services Provider or Logistics Centre/Warehouse<br />

The logistics services provider or logistics centre/warehouse is defined as the party<br />

providing logistics services.
