amounts of pathogens. (1)
INHERENT ASH
the portion of the ash of a material found
affer combustion which is chemically
bound to the molecules of the combustible,
as distinguished from extraneous noncombustible
materials from other sources
or which may be mechanically entrained
with the combustible. (I)
INORGANIC WASTE
waste composed of matter other than plant
or animal (i.e., contains no carbon). (7)
INSTITUTIONAL WASTE
waste materials originating in schools, hospitals.
prisons, research institutions and
other public buildings. (7)
INTEGRATED, SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT
a practice of using several alternative
waste management techniques to manage
and dispose of specific components of the
municipal solid waste stream. Waste man-
agement alternatives include source
reduction, recycling, composting, energy
recovery and 'landfilling. (7)
INTEGRATED WASTE MANAGEMENT
a system of handling wastes, within a hier-
archy of disposal options in which the
order of preference is often listed (i.e., in
descending priorities) such as, for MSW: 1.
Source reduction 2. Recovery. reuse,
recycle 3. Incineration 4. Secure landfill
IPC - Intermediate Plocerslng Center
usually refers to the type of materials
recovery facility (MRF) that processes
residentially collected mixed recyclables
into new products available for market;
Offen used interchangeably with MRF. (7)
w"hutomobiles or parts thereof: iron,
remelting purposes. Unprocessed materials
suitable for reuse or recycling, commonly
referred to as secondary materials. ( I )
KANBAN
used to communicate a demand to produce
a manufactured item and to literally pull
materials to an operation in the process
without scheduling.
KRAFT PAPER
a paper made predominantly from wood
pulp produced by a modified sulfate
pulping process. It is a comparatively
coarse paper particularly noted for its
Strength, and in unbleached grades is used
LANDFILL DISPOSAL SITE
Classification:
CLASS I
Complete protection is provided for all
time for the quality of ground and surface
waters from ail wastes deposited therein
and against hazard to public health and
wildlife resources.
CLASS II
Protection is provided to water quality
from Group 2 and Group 3 wastes. The
types of physical features and the extent
of protection of groundwater quality can
divide Class iI sites into several categories.
Mixed municipal refuse is usually in
Class li.
CLASS 111
Protection is provided to water quality
from Group 3 wastes (essentially the
inert wastes) by location, construction,
and operation which prevent erosion of
deposited materials. (I)
LEACHATE
liquid that has percolated through solid
waste or another medium and has
extracted, dissolved, or suspended mate-
rials from it, which may include potentially
harmful materials. Leachate collection and
treatment is of primary concern at munic-
ipal waste landfills. (7)
