8.7 Recommendations for Pallet Reuse and Reutilization<br />
Because wooden shipping pallets are a significance portion of IBM's solid waste stream, solutions<br />
which reduce the quantity of this waste are vital. One of the simplest solutions to remove pallets from<br />
the wastestream is the adoption of a pallet reuse and reutilization program. To be successful, this<br />
program should incorporate:<br />
1. pallet standardization and enforcement for shipments from all incoming suppliers,<br />
2. pallet reutilization programs for standard pallets which become damaged or no longer conform to<br />
specifications,<br />
3. pallet disposal alternatives which minimize detrimental impact to the environment,<br />
4. the investigation of pallet pool or leasing alternatives,<br />
5. the investigation of return and/or refurbishing programs for non-standard or specialty machine<br />
shipping pallets.<br />
