The concept of Product Stewardship, in which industry assumes responsibility for their products and<br />
packaging from conception to disposal and in which consumers support these initiatives, should be<br />
accepted as a basic principle, vital for the achievement of an environmentally responsible packaging<br />
strategy. Recognizing that all sectors of society have a responsibility to participate in this strategy, the<br />
manufacturers or brand owners must ensure that everything possible has been done to design their<br />
packaging according to the 3R's principle: Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle. Product Stewardship also<br />
applies to imported. subcontracted, or OEM products and packaging.<br />
The handbook does not guarantee that all environmental topics, issues, and options will be presented.<br />
As products and packaging move throughout the global marketplace, they will encounter differing laws<br />
and regulations. The acceptance and endorsement of this informational document by industry and<br />
government can be a starting point in the development of common and harmonized strategies and<br />
decisions worldwide.<br />
