The introduction of a non-standard shipping pallet costs its recipient in materials. labor and space for
subsequent repalletization. It also introduces added waste material into the solid waste stream.
Standard pallets used by IBM are described in IBM’s Packaging and Materials Handling Requirements
Manual, GA21-9261.
Pallet reutilization programs consist of the collection, sortation. and repair of shipping pallets. They
serve to refurbish standardized shipping pallets which have become damaged and no longer conform
to original specifications. Historically, when shipping pallets have become worn, damaged or of ques-
tionable quality, they have been discarded as waste. By establishing a reutilization program, the fol-
lowing benefits may be realized in:
conserving natural resources,
extending the useful lives of landfills,
reducing current and future landfill costs,
additional workload provided for underprivileged or handicapped vendors,
eliminating or reducing new pallet costs.
Key elements of a reutilization program include:
pickup of pallets
inspection and sorting,
repair, if possible,
environmental disposal of unusable pallets or components, if necessary,
delivery of revitalized pallets.
Successful pallet reutilization programs have been be established with the following types of organiza-
tions:
local or regional new pallet manufacturers,
pallet repair companies,
handicapped or minority suppliers,
trash or recycling companies.
The financial aspects of a reutilization program will vary from manufacturer-to-manufacturer, and from
location-to-location. Typically, revitalized pallets can typically be purchased for between 30 to 50% of
the cost of new.
8.6 Pallet Disposal Options
For pallets and pallet components that cannot be reused as part of a reutilization program, multiple
disposal options exist Most of these focus upon pallet or component shredding where processed
material is used as:
industrial fuel and charcoal furnish,
animal bedding andlor poultry litter,
- soil amendment and or mulch.
