material content,
8. Demonstrating that IBM is an environmentally responsible company, and
9. Providing industry leadership in the environmental arena.
IBM intends to address packaging-related environmental issues from a "cradle to
grave" standpoint. This means that IBM will attempt to control and improve the
packaging and distribution processes in all packaging related activities from pur-
chasing of raw materials and components to the final disposition of the finished
product and parts packaging by our customers.
IBM has established guidelines and specifications to minimize any detrimental
impact of Its packaging and distribution processes on the environment. These
documents function as controls to accomplish this task and pertain to all facets
of the IBM's Packaging and Distribution activities including:
Incoming parts and materials,
Internal containers and material handling processes,
lntraplant and interplant shipments,
Products, supplies and replacement parts packages to customers
Each section of this guide discusses a specific issue or concern and how it might
best be addressed. For example, the toxic materials section identifies which
packagings may contain toxic materials, which processes may introduce them,
and how such items can be eliminated or minimized.
IBM Engineering Specifications have been developed to provide clear and
uniform controls. In other cases, checklists or guidelines are supplied. There
are also some special sections and an Appendix to aid in understanding the
importance of these issues:
