SUBJECT. Conservation and Recycling Number 131 A September 28, 1989 It is IBM's policy to conserve energy and raw materials, to recycle commodities and to help protect the environment. The oil crisis of the early 1970s forcefully demonstrated that with planning and imagination we were able to reduce our fuel and power consumption significantly. The solid waste disposal crisis now confronting the United States and other countries gives us an additional challenge to reduce waste by making more efficient use of raw materials and recycled commodities. Recognizing the need for prudent energy use and global environmental protection, while maintaining safe and healthful workplaces, management must strive to keep its focus on both energy conservation and material recycling. Therefore, I expect each operating unit to cooperate fully in conservation programs, giving high priority to energy efficient operation of our facilities and processes and to conservation of energy and raw materials in the design and manufacture of our products. You should also emphasize the use of recyclable packaging and components, the recycling of used commodities, and the purchase of recycled materials. Similarly, i expect managers at ail ieveis to implement these policies by personal exampie--whether it be in simply turning off equipment or lights or in the prudent purchase, consumption, and recycling of supplies and materials. This approach is good business practice and serves the broader purpose of helping to conserve the world's limited resources. 1.7 IBM Corporate Environmental Position 1.7.1 IBM Goals The following are recycling goals established by the EPA and IBM. I. IBM - CFC Elimination in Packaging 100% 1990 2. IBM - Heavy Metals in Packaging Reduction 100% 1991 3. EPA - Recycling Proposed Targets 25% 1992 4. IBM - Recycling Targeted Amount 50% 1992 5. IBM - CFC Elimination in Emissions 100% 1993 6. ISM - HCFC Elimination in Packaging 100% 1994 1.7.2 IBM Actions In support of the aforementioned goals, IBM has implemented the following: 7 Appointed Environmental Coordinators at each location Developed close working relationships between WDES, Corporate Environ- mental and Corporate Governmental Groups.
