To enter the INTERFACE mode, use these commands in the following sequence, starting in the<br />

CONFIGURATION mode:<br />

1 interface interface CONFIGURATION Enter the keyword interface followed by the type of<br />

interface and slot/port information:<br />

• For a 10/100/1000 Ethernet interface, enter the<br />

keyword GigabitEthernet followed by the slot/port<br />

information.<br />

• For a Gigabit Ethernet interface, enter the keyword<br />

GigabitEthernet followed by the slot/port information.<br />

• For the Management interface on the RPM, enter the<br />

keyword ManagementEthernet followed by the slot/<br />

port information.<br />

• For a SONET interface, enter the keyword sonet<br />

followed by slot/port information.<br />

• For a 10 Gigabit Ethernet interface, enter the keyword<br />

TenGigabitEthernet followed by the slot/port<br />

information.<br />

no shutdown INTERFACE Enter the no shutdown command to enable the<br />

interface. If the interface is a SONET interface, enter the<br />

encap ppp command to enable PPP encapsulation.<br />

To confirm that the interface is enabled, use the show config command in the INTERFACE mode.<br />

To leave the INTERFACE mode, use the exit command or end command.<br />

The user can not delete a physical interface.<br />

Configuring Layer 2 mode<br />

The user must place interfaces in Layer 2 mode to configure Layer 2 protocols on the interface, such as<br />

Spanning Tree Protocol.<br />

To configure an interface in Layer 2 mode, use these commands in the INTERFACE mode:<br />

Command Syntax Command Mode Purpose<br />

no shutdown INTERFACE Enable the interface.<br />

switchport INTERFACE Place the interface in Layer 2 (switching) mode.<br />

For information on enabling and configuring Spanning Tree Protocol, see Chapter 10, Layer 2, on page 47.<br />

To view the interfaces in Layer 2 mode, use the command show interfaces switchport (Figure 177) in the<br />

EXEC mode.<br />
