Chassis Grease<br />

Lubricant conforming to the specifications for Chassis Greaseis<br />

recommended for all chassis points fitted with grease gun connections.<br />

Do not use ordinary cup grease, as such greases are<br />

not effective enough to lubricate satisfactorily over the 1000-<br />

mile interval.<br />

camshaft. The oil circulated bv the pump lubricates the main<br />

and connecting rod hearings, the camshaft bearings, thecvlinder<br />

walls, pistons and piston pins, the front end chains, the valve<br />

mechanism and the fan.<br />

Wheel Bearing Grease<br />

Greases approved under the specifications for Wheel Hearing<br />

Grease are suitable for lubricating the wheel bearings and the<br />

clutch release bearing.<br />

This grease is not recommended for chassis lubrication, as<br />

Chassis Grease is much more effective. Furthermore, Chassis<br />

Grease or ordinary cup grease should not be used in the wheel<br />

bearings as such lubricants do not have a sufficiently high melting<br />

point to render satisfactorv service.<br />

Water Pump Grease<br />

A water-resistant calcium soap grease is recommended for use<br />

in the water pump grease cup. Only greases that meet the<br />

specifications for Water Pump Grease should be used; other<br />

greases will be dissolved into the cooling system liquid.<br />

The owner of a <strong>Cadillac</strong> car is urged to have his car put on<br />

schedule lubrication at an authorized <strong>Cadillac</strong>-La Salle service<br />

station; in this way he is assured of having the proper lubricants<br />

used for all lubricating points at the proper mileage intervals.<br />

Engine Lubrication<br />

The supply of oil is carried in the cast aluminum oil pan that<br />

covers the bottom of the crankcase. The oil is circulated by a<br />

gear pump inside of the crankcase. The pump is driven by a<br />

vertical shaft, which is, in turn, driven by a spiral gear on the<br />

There are a few points on the engine that are not taken care<br />

of in the pressure system. These are the starter, generator and<br />

distributor oil cups and the water pump. Lubricating instructions<br />

for these points are given in the lubrication chart.<br />

Oil Level<br />

The normal capacity of the oil pan is eight quarts, which fills<br />

it to the level of the screen in the pan. When the oil pan contains<br />

this amount, the oil level indicator on the right-hand side<br />

of the engine (Fig. 20) indicates "Full." As the oil level<br />

descends, the indicator indicates "Fill" and then "MT" (Empty).<br />

Oil should be added as soon as the indicator ball has dropped to<br />
