The Group was formed by Guy Hands in 1994 as the Principal Finance Group of
Nomura International in London. Terra Firma now advises on two funds totalling
assets of USD4.5 billion, having become independent from Nomura in 2002.
The fi rst fund (TFCP I) is made up of assets acquired on behalf of Nomura
when the Group was part of the Japanese investment bank. The second fund
recently celebrated its fi nal close, with slightly over EUR2.0 billion targeted for
acquisition.
Terra Firma pursues a contrarian investment strategy, primarily targeting large,
out-of-favour and asset-intensive companies with strong and reliable cashfl ows
operating in basic service industries. The fi rm has a hands-on management
style, working directly with its portfolio businesses to overhaul operations and
transform strategy. Terra Firma is the successor to Nomura’s Principal Finance
Group established in 1994.
Terra Firma’s responsible strategy has been successfully implemented at the
former German state-owned railway workers‘ fl ats. Under the new name of
Deutsche Annington, and guided by Terra Firma, its fl at privatisation programme
is the most successful of its kind in Germany.
