Development of Non-FDG PET tracers in Iran

Apart from FDG, which is the most widely used tracer in PET nuclear
medicine, research has been continued for the creation and
introduction of other PET radioisotopes and radiopharmaceuticals
around the world as well as in our country. The development of first
Iranian 68 Ge/ 68 Ga prototype generator, with great performance of 5-
10 mCi per milking is a breakthrough in the development of
radiopharmaceuticals in the country at NSTRI, which a progressive
expanding program is underway for high scale production for
upcoming country’s need.
Production and preclinical studies of
64 Cu-ATSM has also been
recently performed at NSTRI and is ready for clinical studies in
National Radiopharmaceutical Project having interesting
PET/therapeutic properties yielding few hundred-millicurie amounts.
Also great efforts are now being performed on the development of
other molecular imaging probes such as 64 Cu-monoclonal antibodies
and pepties such as trastuzumab, cetuximab and octreotide. In other
research works 61 Cu, 89 Zr, 66 Ga and 82m Rb production have been
performed while feasibility studies for high performance 62 Zn/ 62 Cu
generator is finalized in collaboration with IAEA a CRP work on the
production of 18 F-FLT, 18 F-FAZA and 18 F-Flumazenil is in process.
