The <strong>SAR</strong> loarled onto JÐRS-1 is operatecl at L-l¡and and HH-polalization<br />

with 35' off-nadir angle, producing high resolution (18 x 18 m rvith S looks)<br />

irnages rvitlr the swath wiclth of 75 km. The JÐRS-1 <strong>SAR</strong> is opelatecl up<br />

to twetty minutes per revolutiol (Nemoto e¿ ¿1, [85]).<br />

The specificatiols of<br />

JERS-1 <strong>SAR</strong> is given in Tal¡le 2.8.<br />

Optical Sensols (OPS) is also ar irnpoltant JERS-1 payload sensol together<br />

rvith <strong>SAR</strong>. This passive micron'ave selìsor obselves tlie Earth sulface<br />

lvith seven spectral bands. OPS consists of trvo ilstl'uments: Visible ancl<br />

Near-Infialed Radioneter (VNIR) ancl Short Wavelength Infrared Racliometer'<br />

(SWIR) (MITI/NASDA [77]). Specifically the SWIR is very effective<br />

fol geological stuclies as cler¡ronstrated by Lanclsat TM, ancl lvill be useful<br />

cliscrirninating lithological units on the surface. The VNIR is designed for'<br />

steleoscopic obselvation rvhich is to be achievecl by band 4 of VNIR 15.3' (for'-<br />

rvarcl view) cornl¡inecl lviih band 3 of VNIR (naclir vierv). Both racliornetels<br />
