Because God always thought, because the stream<br />

Of Hie effulgent wisdom is hie own<br />

Working from infinite resource within,<br />

Therefore God never lived without some form<br />

Of manif~ated lovelin888, whose beiUD8<br />

Were the intense reflection of Himself.-<br />

Here my thought ends, my finite wisdom faila.<br />

Why should not suns in one continuous chain<br />

Circle through Being's boundleasne88, and be<br />

Without, beyond all finite flights of thought?<br />

Who shall put bounds to God's omnipotence?<br />

Who knows but that beyond the cosmic sphere.<br />

Beyond celestial heavens themselves, beyond<br />

Time and its agee, apace and all its worlds,<br />

And all the spirikpheres that grow from space,<br />

And all the minds that fill those spheres, expand<br />

Unknown thought-spltmdors of the Infinite,<br />

Systems diverse from suns and stars and heaveus,<br />

Powers diverse from angels and from men ?<br />

All theories are thought-forma that the mind<br />

Creates from its own knowledge or its guess.<br />

God never revealed him~~elf in full<br />

And never will. No intellectual form<br />

Ia ahle to receive the Deity<br />

Save as a cry11tal draws from the solar light.<br />

This is my faith, that God reveals Himself<br />

To every man according to his state,<br />

Higher to higher minds, so leaeening dow,n<br />

To the dim verge of reason. I believe<br />

That there are faculties in man that are<br />

Mind-organs for the Infinite to fill,<br />

And that these may unfold without an end,<br />

And multiply without an end. aud all,<br />

Inter-pervaded by one <strong>com</strong>mon life,<br />

Inform the soul forever. This I know,<br />

Or, knowing not, believe in as in God;·<br />

But still my thought is circumscribed ; my faith<br />
