i11 expressed not only a beautiful and most magnanimous spirit<br />

of lnviug merc\y and kindness, but, as God is the cause of all<br />

things, he al11n expresses to us hnw much greater is the vitality<br />

of righteousness than that of error and selfishness. He tells us<br />

that he will visit "the iniquity of the fathers upon the children<br />

unto the third and fourth gt-neration," but that his loving kindnt>ss<br />

aud met·cy extend to the thou11andth generation.<br />

This law is E>xpre~sed among men in the existence of lineal<br />
