very full of pitch are exceptions, however: they will last<br />

for years.<br />

The manzanita, which covers the hills everywhere, is a remarkable<br />

bush. It has a thick, hard, round leaf, whlch in size<br />

ranges from that of a quarte~ to a half dollar, and is of a<br />

silvery green color. In certain lights this bush appears luminous;<br />

and especially is it so when, covered with dew or frost,<br />

it meets the first rays of the morning sun.<br />

It would he useless to attempt a word picture of the vegetation<br />

of this country. In the language of a senaMter·n country, they feel as if they<br />

hatl lost. all theit· 1111pport, physit,ally and mentally; for in this<br />

plat·e they have tanthing to w01·k with but the primitive astral<br />

elt•ments. BecaU!~e of this, many find this a terrible place.<br />

The people of the wodd h:we no idea to what extent they<br />

are floating along-as a straw npon the great river-on the<br />

title of human th0t1ght. feeling, and emotion: anti when they<br />

are taken out of all this and set upon their own feet, and are<br />

required to draw all sustenance from the God of the universe,<br />
