Global Autonomous L<strong>an</strong>guage Exploitation (GALE)<br />

The goal of the GALE program is to develop automatic systems to extract information from a<br />

variety of sources, such as broadcast news, newswire text or usenet newsgroup articles in the<br />

l<strong>an</strong>guages English, Chinese <strong>an</strong>d Arabic.<br />

In <strong>2010</strong>, the "Lehrstuhl für <strong>Informatik</strong> 6" participated as a member of them ROSETTA team,<br />

led by IBM. <strong>RWTH</strong> contributes tr<strong>an</strong>slations from Arabic to English from two tr<strong>an</strong>slation<br />

engines to this project. In addition, <strong>RWTH</strong> provides consensus tr<strong>an</strong>slations generated from<br />

tr<strong>an</strong>slations of all team members in this l<strong>an</strong>guage pair.<br />

Quaero<br />

Quaero is a large collaborative research <strong>an</strong>d development program, centered at developing<br />

multimedia <strong>an</strong>d multilingual indexing <strong>an</strong>d m<strong>an</strong>agement tools for professional <strong>an</strong>d general<br />

public applications such as the automatic <strong>an</strong>alysis, classification, extraction <strong>an</strong>d exploitation<br />

of information.<br />

The research aims to facilitate the extraction of information of multimedia <strong>an</strong>d multilingual<br />

documents, including written texts, speech <strong>an</strong>d music audio files, <strong>an</strong>d images <strong>an</strong>d videos.<br />

Quaero responds to new needs for the general public <strong>an</strong>d professional use, <strong>an</strong>d new<br />

challenges in multimedia content <strong>an</strong>alysis resulting from the explosion of various information<br />

types <strong>an</strong>d sources in digital form, available to everyone via personal computers, television <strong>an</strong>d<br />

h<strong>an</strong>dheld terminals.<br />

Since the official start of the program in May 2008, the ‘Lehrstuhl für <strong>Informatik</strong> 6’<br />

contributes to the projects by developing <strong>an</strong>d supplying technologies <strong>an</strong>d corpora for Machine<br />

Tr<strong>an</strong>slation, Automatic Speech Recognition <strong>an</strong>d Image Recognition.<br />

JUMAS (Judicial M<strong>an</strong>agement by Digital Libraries Sem<strong>an</strong>tics)<br />

The JUMAS project aims at researching <strong>an</strong>d developing tools for assisting the judicial<br />

process, specifically related to court room activities. The goal is to show possibilities of<br />

integrating information from m<strong>an</strong>y different sources, collecting, enriching <strong>an</strong>d sharing<br />
