Accurate Network Experimentation<br />

The diversity of applications in the Internet <strong>an</strong>d the heterogeneity of today's networked<br />

platforms make the development of communication protocols complex <strong>an</strong>d time-consuming.<br />

This work introduces mech<strong>an</strong>isms, models, <strong>an</strong>d tools to reduce the complexity <strong>an</strong>d<br />

engineering effort required for protocol development <strong>an</strong>d evaluation. It makes the following<br />

three key contributions:<br />

1. Similarities in protocol mech<strong>an</strong>isms are extracted into modular building blocks to reduce<br />

the complexity of communication system development.<br />

2. We introduce a platform abstraction layer to gradually evolve protocol implementations<br />

across platforms avoiding frequent reimplementation.<br />

3. Automated instrumentation of models with system properties allows to accurately<br />

<strong>an</strong>alyzing the time dependent behavior <strong>an</strong>d power consumption of networked devices.<br />
