”Ultra High-Speed Mobile Information <strong>an</strong>d<br />

Communication” (UMIC)<br />

Overview<br />

“Ultra High-Speed Mobile Information <strong>an</strong>d Communication (UMIC)” is the only cluster of<br />

excellence in the areas of Electrical Engineering <strong>an</strong>d Computer Science approved un<strong>der</strong> the<br />

excellence initiative of the Germ<strong>an</strong> Fe<strong>der</strong>al <strong>an</strong>d State government.<br />

UMIC is funding three Endowed Professorships that belong to the Computer Science<br />

Department. These include the post of Prof. Ulrike Meyer, <strong>an</strong>d those of the two junior<br />

professors James Gross <strong>an</strong>d Basti<strong>an</strong> Leibe.<br />

The focus of UMIC research is on mobile information <strong>an</strong>d communication systems of the next<br />

decade. The service quality as perceived by the users must be at least <strong>an</strong> or<strong>der</strong> of magnitude<br />

over that of today's systems with lower cost. This goal c<strong>an</strong> only be achieved by joint<br />

interdisciplinary research, taking all aspects into account from mobile applications to ultrahighly<br />

integrated implementation. Key pillars of the cluster research include<br />

• Mobile Application <strong>an</strong>d Services,<br />

• Wireless Tr<strong>an</strong>sport Platform,<br />

• RF Subsystems <strong>an</strong>d SoC (System on a Chip) Design.<br />

The close interdisciplinary cooperation of the participating teams is essential for the success<br />

of the cluster (see figure below).<br />

Research targets of “Wireless Tr<strong>an</strong>sport Platform” are smart, mobile, broadb<strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>d low-cost<br />

systems, which provide adaptive configuration <strong>an</strong>d seamless connectivity, bal<strong>an</strong>cing between<br />
