They may almost enter a pact as co-conspirators planning defensive strategies and committed acts of organizational sabotage. Although the relationship may be sexual, it is completely work-dominated. One member of such a couple talked to me about this quality of the relationship in retrospect: “I remember the whole early period we were sleeping together. We would be having sex and all I could think about was ‘If only __________ (supervisor)’ could see us now.” This sexual relationship emerged out of the process of the group, and it was literally as if they were having sex on a stage with other organizational members as the audience. The sexual relationship had little meaning apart from the organizational dynamics. 7.8 Internal Boundaries: Predicting the Impact on the Organization The impact of a sexual relationship between two organizational members can differ significantly depending on what roles the persons involved formally and informally perform in the organization. One method of predicting this impact is to examine the internal boundaries within the organizational family. Figure 7-A graphically displays the key members of a small residential treatment center. This organization is four years old and has grown progressively closed professionally and socially over the past two years. The diagram shows three board members and a patron that have contributed to the program’s professional isolation and who socialize extensively with other organizational members. The diagram further shows three management staff members (a director and two supervisors), twelve line staff members consisting of two three-person teams of counselors, one three-person team of house managers, two cooks, and a clerical position. The diagram also includes both current and former program clients. (We will discuss worker-client sexual relationships later in this chapter.) Interns, consultants, and ex-staff members also hold positions in the outer ring of the organizational family because of their involvement in the professional and social closure, but with a reduced degree of time and emotional involvement. Spouses are included because they have become a very visible part of this organizational family due to extensive staff socializing during the past two years. Figure 7-A shows a number of levels that reflect formal power in the organization. These levels are separated by internal boundary lines that

The double boundary lines that separate clients reflect the special status of clients and the strength of the taboo against worker-client sexual contact. In general, we can say that the greater the number of boundary lines crossed by those sexually involved, the greater the potential repercussions in the organizational family. We could speculate that the act producing the least reactions in the organization would be a sexual relationship between two members at the same level whose daily role functions are only minimally related.
