While there are generalized responses to stress that most humans share—what Hans Selye has called the general adaptation syndrome— the degree to which the body responds to stress through such mechanisms as altering blood supply and pressure, sharpening sensory acuity, and altering adrenaline production differs from individual to individual. Such genetically predetermined differences influence our tolerance to distress and our unique areas of physical vulnerability to prolonged distress. Prolonged distress reveals the weakest link in the body’s system of physiological defenses. Understanding these weakest links requires a knowledge of our unique physiology and the genetic and developmental influences that shape it. The cardinal rule of stress management—know thyself!—begins with this type of knowledge of one’s own body. Some clues to our unique vulnerabilities can be gleaned by reviewing our family histories. The issue is not just what vulnerabilities we may have inherited that make us vulnerable to high-stress environments. The issue, put simply, is given my family tree, what are the worst lifestyle choices I could make? It is tragically ironic that the worst choices we could make are often the very choices we do make. In a family tree loaded with alcoholism, it may be high risk for us to drink at all, but even higher risk for us to regularly use alcohol to self-medicate the effects of personal and professional stress. Smoking is a dangerous risk for any of us, but for those of us sitting on a family tree loaded with cancer, respiratory disorders, and cardiovascular disease, smoking—and smoking excessively in response to distress—could prove to be a most lethal choice. In the early 1900s, temperance lecturers used to place a braindamaged alcoholic in front of the lectern while they spoke. The alcoholic served as a living example of the horrors of demon rum. I have often had the impulse to copy this technique in my stress seminars. Imagine poor Joe fidgeting impatiently in front of the lectern, clearly overweight and underexercised, glossy-eyed from an infinity of sixty-hour workweeks and no vacations, washing down double cheeseburgers and fried potatoes with a beer, chain-smoking cigarettes between bites—all while sitting under a diagram of his family tree that shows four generations of deaths from cancer and heart disease. The emerging field of holistic medicine has forged a definition of health as a state of harmony between body and mind and one’s physical and psychosocial environment.
