The incongruity between (1) an individual’s knowledge and skill level and the skills required to perform a particular role, (2) an individual’s level of stress tolerance and the level of stress in a particular role, and (3) an individual’s style of stress management and the methods of stress management officially and informally sanctioned by an organization. Role Revitalization. The restructuring of a job role to increase its level of professional stimulation and its importance to an organization. Role Safety Hazards. The degree to which one experiences apprehension about potential physical or psychological harm in the performance of one’s professional role. Role Stressor. Any condition in a work environment that decreases one’s ability to perform organizational tasks and decreases one’s self-esteem. Role Supports. Any condition in a work environment that increases one’s ability to perform organizational tasks and increases one’s self-esteem. Role-Termination Problems. Problems caused by a failure to provide permissions, procedures, and processes to allow members guilt-free exit from an organization. Scapegoating. The projection of blame for systemic problems in an organization onto a single organizational unit or member. Self-Regulated Organizational Family. An organizational family that regulates its degree of organizational closure through both internal and external feedback. Boundary permeability fluctuates depending on worker needs for outside support and replenishment during periods of health and for organizational closure during periods of transition and crisis. The lowest level of professional distress is experienced in this organizational model. Self-Talk. The internal dialogue that enhances or inhibits acting on certain feelings or thoughts. Sexual Closure. The meeting of most, if not, all of the sexual needs of organizational members within the boundary of an organizational family. Sexual closure arises out of isolation and a sexually stunted organizational culture that views extrasystem intimacies as a threat to organizational stability and intrasystem intimacies as a medium of increased organizational commitment and cohesion. Sexual Culture. The ethics and values related to sexuality in an organization that are expressed through language, artifacts, attitudes, roles, and the spoken and unspoken rules governing relationships among organizational members.

The demand on the human body for adaptational change. Stress Response. The generalized and specialized reactions (adaptations) of an individual to stress. Stressors. Those situations, conditions, or people that trigger stress. Triangling. A pattern of communication between two people in which significant messages to each other are communicated through a third party. Type-A Personality. A personality style marked by the compulsive need to achieve more and more in less and less time.
