Code of Professional Practice. The explicit definition of the ethical standards,<br />

aspirational values, folk wisdom, procedural directives, and organizational etiquette<br />

that guide decision making in an organization.<br />

Decompression Rituals. Regularly performed actions that signal to us and<br />

others that one part of life (work) is ending and another part of life (personal)<br />

is beginning.<br />

Distress (Authoritarian–Moral Approach). The managerial denial of the<br />

existence of professional distress via the definition of stress-related behaviors<br />

as problems of a worker’s character, values, and motivation to work.<br />

Distress (Clinical Approach). The definition of professional distress as a<br />

personal emotional problem of a worker.<br />

Distress (Cognitive Approach). The definition of professional distress as<br />

emerging from an individual’s irrational and unrealistic beliefs and expectations<br />

regarding a workplace.<br />

Distress (Environmental Approach). The definition of professional distress<br />

as a problem of unhealthy physical and social conditions in a work environment.<br />

Distress (Organizational). A stage of deteriorating organizational health<br />

that occurs when tasks essential to the survival of an organization fail to be<br />

adequately completed due to the stress-related decline in performance of key<br />

organizational members.<br />

Distress (Professional). A deterioration of one’s personal and interpersonal<br />

functioning directly related to continued contact with a high-stress work<br />

environment.<br />

Distress (Systems Approach). The definition of professional distress as<br />

a breakdown in the relationship between a worker and an organization.<br />

Distress (Training Approach). The definition of professional distress as a<br />

problem of skills deficiency—both technical skills and stress-management<br />

skills.<br />

Double-Bind Communications. Contradictory verbal messages communicated<br />

over time to workers by organizational leaders and supervisors with an<br />

accompanying prohibition against seeking any clarification of the incompatible<br />

messages.<br />

Ecology (Organizational). The study of the relationships and interrelationships<br />

among workers and their organizational environments.
