ORAL INTERPRETATION<br />

This certificate provides students with vocal training that is helpful for careers in<br />

theater, business, law, and education.<br />

PALEOBIOLOGY/NATURAL HISTORY<br />

This Certificate of Accomplishment signifies that students have received basic<br />

knowledge in natural sciences and skills, which facilitate paraprofessional<br />

employment such as geological/biological field assistant and field naturalist. It<br />

also provides a good foundation for continued study in a broad variety of<br />

scientific fields including Biology, Geology, and Paleontology.<br />

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES<br />

1. Demonstrate scientific literacy by defining and explaining the major steps in<br />

the scientific method of investigation, specific<strong>all</strong>y the difference between<br />

empirical data, interpretation, testable hypothesis, theory, paradigm,<br />

speculation, and pseudo-science.<br />

2. Apply general math skills such as unit conversion, ratios, and percentages to<br />

solving simple rate problems; evaluate data, produce, and interpret tables<br />

and graphs; apply the metric system of measurement.<br />

3. Demonstrate an understanding of the geologic time scale and methods of<br />

measuring geologic time.<br />

4. Identify and classify the common earth materials, such as most common<br />

minerals, rocks, and fossils in the lab and in the field and their basic<br />

relationship to common natural resources.<br />

PHLEBOTOMY<br />

The Health Sciences and Environmental Studies Division offers a certificate<br />

program in phlebotomy that meets <strong>all</strong> of the Department of Health Services<br />

regulations (AB 1557) that became effective in January 2002. This program is<br />

approved by the Department of Health Services for the courses that include<br />

theory and lab practice plus a 108-hour externship. No transfer courses from<br />

other institutions are accepted for this certificate. Completion of this certificate<br />

<strong>all</strong>ows students to sit for the A.S.P.T. exam as required by California State Bill AB<br />

1557. All courses must be passed at <strong>Ohlone</strong> <strong>College</strong> with at least a grade of C<br />

to earn the certificate.<br />

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES<br />

1. Apply knowledge of medical terminology when performing the duties of a<br />

certified Phlebotomy Technician.<br />

2. Define the scope and practices of a certified Phlebotomy Technician.<br />

3. Demonstrate safe techniques while drawing blood from a variety of patients.<br />

4. Demonstrate knowledge and skill set needed to fulfill the state requirements<br />

for practice as a certified Phlebotomy Technician.<br />

5. Complete successfully 50 venipunctures and 10 skin sticks on live patients<br />

as required by California State law.<br />

PHOTOGRAPHY<br />

The Photography Certificate of Accomplishment signifies that students have<br />

acquired skills in fundamental processes of photography including traditional<br />

and digital work processes with emphasis on creative expression. This certificate<br />

helps students develop concepts and skills that will enable them to develop<br />

creatively in the fine arts.<br />

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES<br />

1. Demonstrate personal growth as an artist using photography.<br />

2. Employ skills and processes required for working in traditional film<br />

photography.<br />
