This course is a survey of photography as an historical and<br />
contemporary form of art and communication. The student<br />
will develop appreciation for and comprehension of the issues,<br />
practices, and theories involved in visual communication as<br />
well as gain insights into the role of photography with regard<br />
to social, cultural, and political shifts and events from its<br />
inception in the early 19th century to the present day. (GC)<br />

This course covers the fundamental processes of photography<br />
including camera mechanics, film exposure, optics,<br />
composition, and darkroom skills required to produce quality<br />

Students refine their use of light sensitive materials and gain<br />

This is a darkroom course in black and white photography.<br />
Students learn about camera exposure as it relates to print<br />
controls. The course spends time on previsualization<br />
techniques and affords the opportunity for students to<br />
emphasize creativity and artistic style. Students work<br />
independently on photography projects of their own design.<br />

Beginning Photoshop<br />

new to Adobe Photoshop. Students learn how to work with a<br />
digital “darkroom” using images supplied by the instructor for<br />
this purpose. Topics included are image file management and<br />
organization, file formats, resolution, basic image editing,<br />
selective image editing, scanning, preparing images for webbased<br />
application, how to purchase a digital camera, and<br />

This course is for photographers wishing to increase their<br />
working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop. Students work with a<br />
digital “darkroom” using original images as well as images<br />
supplied by the instructor. Topics included are working with<br />
layers and masks, opacity and blend modes, transforming,<br />
working with text, camera raw, actions and smart filters, print<br />
and web-based workflow. A digital camera is not required.<br />

several directions. Students will undertake photographic<br />
projects designed to provide engagement with a variety of<br />
subject matter and ways of photographing, look at<br />
photographic work in online and local g<strong>all</strong>eries and museums,<br />
consider current issues having to do with photographic<br />
technologies, discuss their photographs with other students in<br />
an effort to improve their creative processes. Technical<br />
instruction will include camera functions, resizing and saving<br />
digital files, and minor image modification. For intense<br />
technical instruction see ART-138A and ART-138B. Repeatable<br />

This course continues an exploration of the photographer’s<br />
creative process from several directions. Students will<br />
undertake photographic projects designed to provide<br />
engagement with a variety of subject matter and ways of<br />
photographing; complete an extended photographic project of<br />
their choosing and receive guidance from the instructor and<br />
students; look at photographic work in online and local<br />
g<strong>all</strong>eries and museums; consider current issues around<br />
photographic technologies; discuss their photographs with<br />
other students in an effort to improve their creative processes.<br />
Students will formalize their individual projects as books or<br />
online g<strong>all</strong>eries. Technical instruction will include camera<br />
functions, resizing and saving digital files, and minor image<br />
modification. For intense technical instruction see ART-138A<br />
and ART-138B. Students should consider completing ART-138A<br />
prior to enrolling in this course, but it is not a requirement.<br />
