12 章 を 抜 粋 して、「 自 由 海 論 」の 名 のもとにし、これを 公 刊 、「 公 海 自 由 の 原 則 」

First Dutch Edition. 4to, [xxviii], 421, [23]pp, with woodcut portrait of the
author verso of title, contemporary overlapping vellum, very minor defect at
outer margin and corner of rear side. Two old names on title, one crossed
out. First complete Dutch edition of Grotius’ great book on the law of war
and peace. First published in Latin in 1625 (De iure belli ac pacis) this is the
first translation into any language, apart from a fragment of 62 pages in
Dutch published in 1626. Translations into English (1654), French (1687),
German (1707) and Italian (1777) followed. The name of the translator
mentioned on the title as H.V. [or H.U.] remains unknown. Grotius’ correspondence
points out that he did not approve of the present translation. A
new also anonymous translation was published in 1651, and another new
translation, now by Jan van Gaveren, appeared in 1705. Ter Meulen & Diermanse
