First Edition in Latin. 4to, pp (iv), 365 (15), woodcut device on title, woodcut
initials and ornaments, a little dust-soiling and a blank corner torn away,
contemporary panelled calf, worn, neatly rebacked. The Latin text, translated
by the author himself, differs substantially from the English edition of
1651, and is generally considered to be the definitive text. “It is in the Latinversion in
which Hobbes really expressed his opinions. (being) less concerned with personalities.”
(Macdonald and Hargreaves). The Latin edition also adds a new Appendix containing
three apologetic dialogues in place of the original Review and Conclusion. Macdonald

full calf. Hotman, also known as Hotoman and Hotomanus, was a famed Parisian jurist
and professor, sometime secretary to John Calvin, historiographer t King Charles IX,
a dabbler in alchemy and councilor of state of Henry of Navarre. This Franco-Gallia is
his most famous work, a statement of the ideal of Protestant statesmanship, pleading for a
