2 volumes, folio (340 × 217mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, double gilt fillet panels to
the boards, Volume I rebacked with the original spine laid down, later sage green morocco
lettering- and numbering-pieces, compartments gilt with arabesque corner tools and
a large floral central device. Additional engraved title and 45 plates, most double-page, 6
folding, including large folding map of Japan and a plan of Nagasaki, title pages printed
in red and black. Externally a little rubbed and neatly restored, joints of Volume II just
starting, new free endpapers, a few older repairs on the plate folds, light browning, but
overall a very good copy. Bookplates of Hans Sloane Stanley (1739―1827), the grandnephew
of Hans Sloane who licensed this work as President of the Royal Society.
ケンペル(1651—1716)はドイツの 博 物 学 者 、 医 者 です。1689 年 オランダ 東 インド 会 社 の 医 官
に 就 職 して、ジャヴァに 渡 り、シャムを 経 て 来 日 しました。 滞 在 中 商 館 長 に 従 って2 度 江 戸 に 参
府 し、 徳 川 綱 吉 に 謁 見 しています。 本 書 は 日 本 の 社 会 、 政 治 、 宗 教 や 動 植 物 を 鋭 く 観 察 したもの
で、ヨーロッパ 人 の 日 本 研 究 、 日 本 観 に 新 紀 元 を 劃 するものでした。ケンペル 死 後 、 原 文 の 刊 行
より 早 く 英 語 版 が 出 版 され、その 後 各 国 語 版 に 翻 訳 されました。 日 本 研 究 における 第 一 級 の 資 料
です。
