パーチャス(1575 頃 ―1626)は 同 時 代 のハクルート(Richard Hakluyt, 1552 頃 ―1616)と 並
び 称 される 著 名 な 旅 行 記 編 集 者 です。ハクルートが 記 したThe Principal Navigations, Voiages,
Traffiques and Discoueries of the English Nation(1589—1600 )は 有 名 ですが、 本 資 料 はさらにその
内 容 を 拡 大 、 継 続 するものとして 価 値 ある 資 料 となっております。 本 資 料 には 当 時 大 英 帝 国 の 植
民 地 であった 北 アメリカに 関 するものや、 貿 易 国 として 東 方 へ 拡 大 していく 帝 国 の 歴 史 的 資 料 が
豊 富 に 含 まれております。 特 筆 すべきは、 英 国 と 日 本 に 関 する 最 初 期 の 記 録 が 多 数 載 っていると
ころにあります。 東 インド 会 社 のジョン・サリス(John Saris, 1580―1643)が 始 めて 通 商 目 的 に
日 本 を 訪 れた 記 録 や、 日 本 との 貿 易 活 動 で 記 された 手 紙 など 多 数 含 んでおります。 日 本 に 関 する
資 料 は 数 えられるだけでも99ページにのぼります。また、 大 英 帝 国 が 東 方 貿 易 でポルトガルやオ
ランダと 競 い 合 う 資 料 も 豊 富 に 載 っており、 日 本 研 究 、アジア 研 究 にとって 非 常 に 有 用 な 資 料 と
なりうるでしょう。

present as a stub only, as often. Collates: a—p8 q6 r6 A8 B8 C4. 42 lines to
a page. Nineteenth-century vellum over thin pasteboards, bookplate of William
Horatio Crawford on front pastedown endpaper. Large penwork initials
and capital strokes in red throughout, contemporary ownership inscription
on last leaf verso. Quaritch pencilled collation mark on rear inside cover,
dated 10 Jan 1968. Some minor marginal finger-soiling in margins, an excellent
copy, unwashed, the paper fresh and strong.
